Precious Old China @ Central Market

Last Friday I and colleagues went to Precious Old China to celebrate birthday for 2 lucky girls. To read more about history and details about this restaurant, you can either follow the blog links at the end of this post, or read newspaper/magazine write-ups here, what most interesting is Stephen Chow visited here before!

This is our first visit to Precious Old China, to avoid the crowd during lunch hour, our lovely office manager prearranged table and food for 16 of us, which is a wise decision (I saw lot of tables waited so long for their food).

Lady's Fingers Kerabu (RM 10.80)

Four Season Beans (RM 10.80)

First glance you will think these are same dish, in fact it's not. I don't really like these mainly because they are too dry. Serve these as a starter or side dish maybe better as they do not go well with white rice.

Fried Assam Prawns (RM 39.90)

Most expensive dish we've ordered, the prawn should taste good to everyone, I think. I don't really favor prawn dishes, but this is typical homestyle cuisine that my mum always cooks and I still like my mum's style, with stronger assam paste's taste deep into the prawn meat.

Mein Kan Tofu (RM 8.80)

Bitter Gourd Omelet (RM 8.80)

Crispy Fried Sotong (RM 18.80)

Mein Kan Tofu, Bitter Gourd Omelet and Fried Sotong are just normal to me. Tofu and Omelet just lack of some very important flavor here... non-halal smell I guess ;-), which is not possible to be served here.

Ju Hu Char (RM 10.80)

Devil Curry (RM 18.90)

You may notice not many Nyonya's signatures that we've ordered, except the Ju Hu Char, but I don't really like it either. The aroma and taste is good, but I'm expecting slightly juicy meat fillings.

First sip on our last dish, Devil Curry, makes me thought this is cooked with fish... surprisingly, it is not. Maybe my understanding of Nyonya's cuisines just too lame, personal opinion this should far better if substitute chicken with fish.

Bill amount RM 467++ (big group of us, 3 pax for each dish). I will revisit Petaling Street outlet again, to try my other favorites (Chicken Kapitan, Mutton, Nasi Lemak, Curry Fish Head, Desserts, etc.).

Jackson : tofu just so so to me.

wmw : not sure whether both outlets serve same quality, but personally I prefer main branch at Petaling Street although I've never been there before ;-)

Joe : picture taking skill is just amateur :-)

Big Boys Oven : Yummy food not necessary expensive, keep this when there's some special event then.

The sister branch is Old China Cafe. That place feels more intimate and cozy.

Very hard to find a nyonya restaurant that serves pork nowdays. For me, the best nyonya food is still those cooked at home Like my aunt's and mummy's ! :D

both outlets hv different chefs, so maybe the taste could differ. it's too bad Beam Cafe had closed else you can taste some very nice food along the same row as Old China
